From Jonghyeon Cathedral to Myeongdong Cathedral: Walking through the Faith Center of Korea's Modern Democratization

Located in the prime area of Myeongdong, the red brick church stands out prominently. This over 120-year-old Catholic cathedral is the birthplace of the Korean Catholic Church and its faith center. It was founded by King Gojong and is the first Gothic spire building on the Korean Peninsula, with stone pillars and red bricks supporting its majestic 45-meter height. It was originally called Jonghyeon Cathedral. During the reign of King Heonjong, Western forces began to enter Korea, and Catholicism was introduced to this land. From King Heonjong's time, there were multiple incidents of persecution against Catholic missionaries and believers. The victims of the Byeongin and Byeongwu persecutions were moved to the underground crypt for placement, and a Blessed Altar was set up on the left side of the cathedral.
