Stone Fort Park

[Scenic Spots] Shipaotai Park, located in the southeast corner of old Shantou, is a memorial park with Qilu Fort as its main building. [Attractions] Qilu Fort is a circular castle building. The gate and gun lanes are built with standard granite blocks, so it is commonly known as the "Stone Fort". [Scenic Spot] Qilu Fort was mainly built with shell ash sand, boiled glutinous rice and brown sugar syrup. It was built in the 13th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty and completed in the 5th year of Guangxu (1874-1879). It took five years and cost 80,000 silver dollars. It was the main coastal defense building in the eastern Guangdong region of the Qing Dynasty and has a history of more than 100 years. [Attractions] Qilu Fort is divided into two floors, each with 18 gun positions and several gun holes. The gun lane on the bottom floor is 4.1 meters wide and about 300 meters long, deep and winding. (1) Inside the fort, there is a 27-step corrugated stone staircase, which is cleverly designed and practical, making it easy to push the artillery onto the platform. (2) There are 72 ventilation and communication towers on the fort, with three in each group standing in a triangular shape. It is used to convey information between the upper and lower parts of the fort and to provide ventilation and lighting for the lower floor. (3) On the northeast side of the fort, there is a crescent-shaped command platform, which is used to command and watch soldiers’ training. (4) In the northwest corner of the Dianjiangtai, there is a spiral stone staircase leading to the artillery lane. The stone staircase is relatively hidden, which is convenient for evacuating and transporting ammunition to the platform during combat.
