[Kyoto Trip] Historical Exploration: Jodo Sect "Shokoji Temple"

A temple belonging to the Chinzei school of the Jodo sect In the late Heian period, the Buddhist sculptor Kokei lived here, and in the garden behind it is said to have been the hermitage of the second Jodo sect founder, Seikobo Bencho (Chinzei monk). Bencho visited the monk Honen for eight years and inherited the flame of the Jodo sect's teachings. This temple is said to have been founded in the first year of the Genkyu era, when Kokei, grieving the separation of Bencho and enshrining his own portrait in the hermitage, gave it the name Seiko-an. When you pass through the main gate of the temple, you will see the lucky Jizo Bodhisattva, who will grant your wishes, on your left. First, you put in an offering and put your hands together. In the main hall, a standing statue of Shaka Nyorai made in the Kamakura period is enshrined. The temple treasures include two scrolls, the Seikai Mandala and the Taima Mandala. In the temple grounds, there are the graves of Oishi Yoshio's mother, Wataya Zenemon Yoshitoki, and Amanoya Rihei. It's a small temple, but it's fun to look back on the history of Amano Rihei!
