I picked it up again and again, searching for words that would touch my heart, as I compared the breath of Suga with mine. In "Ultramarine Blue Sky," Suga writes about the famous fresco "Equestrian Statue of Guidoriccio da Fogliano" (by Simone Martini) in the Siena City Hall. [I have felt a deep attachment to his horseback figure, which seems to be cast under the endless deep ultramarine sky, since I first saw it.] [I was fascinated by the deep color of the sky, which symbolizes the loneliness of Guidoriccio's journey.] Suga first liked this painting because Guidoriccio's figure seemed too small compared to the entire fresco, and he looked lonely. The ultramarine color could have highlighted the loneliness of General Guidoriccio, who travels alone on horseback through the desolate battlefield, but I didn't see it that way. Is the mountain city in front an enemy castle that will be attacked? If so, is the castle seen in the background already defeated? Guidoriccio's figure on horseback, with his back straight and his eyes sharp, looked dignified, leisurely, and powerful. Perhaps he is returning with some good news. Even so, the ultramarine sky in this painting is truly beautiful. A deep blue, as if various shades of blue overlap each other, yet transparent. It is the fleeting color of the slowly changing twilight before it turns black. A calm, rich color. I was captivated by this deep blue all by myself, thinking that it was definitely an Italian sky.
