Geirangerfjord, Norway, World Heritage

The Geirangerfjord is 15 km long and 1.5 km wide at its maximum. It is a fjord in the Sunnmøre region of Møre and Romsdal counties in Norway. It is an offshoot of the Storfjord, the fifth longest fjord in Norway at 110 km long. The small village of Geiranger is located at the end of the fjord, where the Geirangerva River flows into it. The Geirangerfjord is one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions and a port of call for cruise lines across Northern Europe. In 2005 it was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site along with the Nærøyfjord. The fjord is surrounded by the steepest mountains on the entire west coast and is very narrow with no habitable coastal area. Because the cliffs on both sides of the Geirangerfjord rise straight out of the water and reach the sky. The Seven Sisters (Figure 2-10) and the Suitor (Figure 11-12) waterfalls are the two most famous waterfalls in the Geirangerfjord, with a drop of 300 meters and 275 meters respectively. They are located on the cliffs on both sides of the fjord. According to legend, the "Suitor" is trying to woo the "Seven Sisters" on the opposite side. The Bridal Veil (Figures 13-14) is another waterfall in the fjord. It is so named because it cleverly falls on the edge of a rock.
