Donghe Zen Temple, originally known as the Soto Zen Main Temple Branch, was first established by a Japanese monk in 1908. The designer was also a Japanese, Zentaro Irie. It is one of the few Buddhist temples in Taiwan that features Japanese Zen style. The Guanyin Zen Hall within the temple is a dedicated space for worship, built in the symmetrical Minnan-style courtyard. The coexistence of Japanese Buddhist architecture and Minnan-style religious architecture holds significant cultural and historical value. The Soto Zen Main Temple Taiwan Branch was a major Buddhist center during the Japanese colonial period.
