#The oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo#

It was the Asuka period. On the morning of March 18th in the 36th year of Empress Suiko (623), the brothers Hamanari and Takenari were fishing in Edoura Port (Sumida River) when they suddenly saw the statue of Ikkatsu Kannon. The local chieftain Zhongzhi (there are many different versions of his name) deeply converted to the holy Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and then became a monk, converted his home into a temple, and devoted his life to worship and support. In the first year of Taika (645), Master Katsukai came here and built the Guanyin Hall. According to the instructions in his dream, he designated the main Buddha as a secret statue. This rule of passing on the Dharma has been strictly observed to this day. Sensoji Temple is located in a fishing village in Irie, Tokyo Bay, one of the vast Musashino fields. It has grown and prospered with the increase in the number of worshippers. In the early Heian period, Jikaku Daishi Ennin (794-864), the founder of Sensoji Temple and the third abbot of Tendai on Mount Hiei, came to the mountain and carved the main Buddha statue. Sensō-ji Temple, which was deeply revered by the shogun in the Kamakura period, gradually gained the faith of famous military commanders in history as external protectors, and the majesty of the temple gradually increased. In the early Edo period, the hall was designated as a place of prayer for the shogunate by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the majesty of the hall and pagoda became more complete, and it flourished as the center of Edo culture. Sensoji Temple, the oldest temple in Tokyo, is known throughout the country as the Asakusa Kannon. Currently, about 3,000,000 worshippers come to worship every year, making it a center of public faith. #2024TravelReview #100WaysToTravel
