Tokyo's lesser-known temples - Hoshoji Temple

Hōjōji Temple is located in Nishi-Waseda, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. It was built in 1641 and founded by Master Ryosho of Wiseiin. It is said that in 1639, Ryosho Shonin dreamed of an old man who predicted that a successor would be born to the Tokugawa family, so he went to Edo to pray and helped build Anahachimangu Shrine. Later, the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, visited the temple in 1649 and gave it the name "Komatsuyama Wiseiin Hoshokaiji Temple" and allowed the use of the Tokugawa family's sunflower crest, showing its deep connection with the shogunate. The temple enshrines the Holy Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who is called "Rongtong Mushifeng Avalokitesvara" by believers. Since the Edo period, it has been famous for praying for the recovery of babies' night cries and malnutrition.
