The Birthplace of Japanese Archaeology: Omori Shell Mound in Tokyo

Visit the Omori Shell Mound located in Ota Ward, Omori, Tokyo 🚶 This site, familiar from Japanese history textbooks, was discovered by Dr. Morse, an American zoologist, during his visit to Japan for research. While traveling by train from Yokohama to Tokyo, he spotted shell layers from the train window, which led to the discovery of what is now known as the Omori Shell Mound! Dr. Morse later conducted excavation surveys here, marking the first academic excavation in Japan. This is why the Omori Shell Mound is referred to as "the birthplace of Japanese archaeology." 🥸 During the excavation, clam shells were found alongside bones of land animals such as deer and wild boar. 💡 Upon visiting the site, I was first struck by the spaciousness of the park. 😳 I had imagined it to be more compact, but it even features a fountain plaza, making it a popular spot for families. In the plaza, there is a statue of Dr. Morse, commemorating his achievements.
