Driving in Tuscany - Our Unforgettable Road Trip in Late Spring

I’ve been to Italy several times, exploring different regions, but Tuscany remains my top favorite destination. Why? Because with a self-driving tour, I can explore this beautiful region at my own pace, and easily book fantastic accommodations that are typically hard to access by public transport. So, remember the most important thing: hire a car. It’s really easy to drive in the Italian countryside (though not so much in the cities, of course!). We rented a car in Florence and embarked on a 3-day tour of Tuscany. Here’s my itinerary: Day 1: Start the morning with some sightseeing in Florence (if it’s your first visit). Florence is a walkable city, so you can choose a few nearby sights to explore. Then, pick up the car and hit the road. You can either take the highway or opt for the provincial roads, but I highly recommend the SR222 route—it’s incredibly scenic. We stayed overnight at an agriturismo (farm stay), with the town of Pienza nearby for groceries and dinner. Day 2: Wake up early to enjoy the sunrise. This is one reason I recommend staying at an agriturismo—you can experience the peace and tranquility of Val d’Orcia, and a sunrise in a serene, secluded spot. Spend the day driving around wherever you wish. We visited Pienza, then headed to another farm stay near Agriturismo Baccoleno, famous for its sunset views. One of the perks of traveling in spring is the longer days; the sunset at Baccoleno was around 8:30 pm (if I remember correctly)! Day 3: Drive to Siena, soaking in the stunning scenery along the way. Spend some time exploring this charming town. We stayed overnight near Siena. Day 4: Get up early and drive back to Florence before noon. This itinerary allows you to keep your car rental to just three days. Depending on your pace and interests, you can easily pin any location on the map of Tuscany and create your own adventure. I’m sure this will be one of your most memorable trips! #italytrip
