The Venice Mask Carnival, commonly known as the Mask Festival, originated from the ancient Roman Saturnalia. The original origin of the word Carnival is related to a story in the New Testament about the devil tempting Jesus. The first official document declaring Carnival an official public holiday was in 1296. From that time on and in the following centuries, Carnival lasted for 6 weeks, from December 26 to Ash Wednesday (mercoledi delle ceneri), but in fact people often started celebrating in early October. The Venice Mask Carnival begins two weeks before Ash Wednesday and lasts until Shrove Tuesday, which is around early or mid-February each year.
