Swiss ski resort Alpine village Wengen

Wengen is a village in the Jungfrau region of the Alps in the canton of Bern in central Switzerland, at an altitude of 1,274 meters. The place was mentioned in official documents as early as 1268. Primarily an alpine farming community, the village began to be visited by tourists in the early 19th century. The landscape of the Wengen region was described in the History of a Six Weeks' Journey by the English novelist Mary Shelley and the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and in Manfred by Lord Byron, published in 1817. These literary works marked the beginning of the development of modern tourism in Wengen. The famous German musician Felix Mendelssohn also visited here in the early 19th century, and Wengen will also host the Mendelssohn Music Week from August 19 to 26, 2023. The construction of guest houses and hotels in Wengen began in the middle of the 19th century, with the opening of the Launerhaus in 1859 for 30 guests and the Pension Wengen in 1880 for 100 guests. The Wengenalp Railway, which began operating in 1893, made it easy to reach alpine villages that previously had to be reached by walking up steep slopes, and the tourism and skiing industries flourished. Wengen hosts the Lauberhorn Classic ski race of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in January.
