| Visit Baotong Temple and see some cats. Built in the Liu Song period of the Southern Dynasties, it is about 1,600 years old. It was originally called Dongshan Temple and has been renamed several times. In the 21st year of the Chenghua period of the Ming dynasty, it was named Baotong Temple. The temple is built on a mountain and covers an area of more than 110,000 square meters. It is the oldest temple in Wuhan and the largest temple in a city in central and southern China. Baotong Temple is a royal temple that has been supported by 10 emperors and 6 princes in history. There are many buildings in the temple, including the mountain gate, Shengseng Bridge, and the pond for freeing captive animals. The Mahavira Hall was built in the late Ming dynasty, the Hongshan Pagoda was built in the Yuan dynasty, and the Iron Buddha Hall houses a Tang dynasty iron Buddha and other precious cultural relics. It is home to many cultural relics, including a Song dynasty bell, a Yuan dynasty pagoda, a Sumeru seat, and a Ming dynasty lion. It was also the site of the Wuchang Buddhist College founded by Master Taixu. Baotong Temple is the first Buddhist site in the Three Chu region and is known as one of the four famous Buddhist temples in Wuhan, along with Guiyuan Temple, Lianxi Temple, and Gude Temple. Tips: The scenic area ends at Hongshan Pagoda. If you have enough time and energy, you can continue up the mountain, where there are many cats that are quite docile.
