Looks Like Europe? It’s Actually Yokohama! I originally planned just a one‑day trip to Yokohama, but after exploring, I realized it deserves more time. The city has evolved so much—it genuinely feels like a slice of Europe thanks to its historic architecture and wide, tree‑lined streets. Starting from Chinatown, I wandered toward the historic port area and came across stunning buildings such as: The Yokohama Specie Bank, built in 1904 in a neo‑Baroque style now the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History. The remarkable Port Opening Memorial Hall (“Jack Tower”), a 1917 brick-and-granite structure with a 36‑m clock tower. Nearby, the Former Kawasaki Bank (today the Sompo Japan Nipponkoa building) in German Renaissance style, with its large dome and mirrored glass addition blending old and new . Wandering further into Yamate, I passed elegant residences like the Ehrismann Residence, a 1920s Swiss merchant’s home with a soft green facade. Drinking coffee at a local cafe, I noticed the pace here is more relaxed than in bustling Tokyo while still being a modern, highly livable city consistently rated among the world’s top urban areas. Places like Minato Mirai 21 add a modern skyline backdrop, with Landmark Tower, Queens Square, and the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel making for an impressive contrast. Why stay longer: There’s a lot to see beyond just Chinatown—heritage buildings, quiet parks, waterfront views, and relaxed cafes. I wished I had more than a single day, and now I know I’ll spend at least two next time, soaking in both the historic charm and modern convenience of this unique city.
