Yuncheng｜🪦Shun Emperor Mausoleum

The Mausoleum of Emperor Shun is located in Xiquma Village, Beixiang Town, Yanhu District, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. It is the mausoleum of Emperor Shun, one of the "Five Emperors" of the Chinese nation. In May 2006, it was announced by the State Council as a national key cultural relic protection unit and a national 4A-level scenic spot. The unique layout of the mausoleum in front and the hall in the back is grand and unique. There are three main attractions in Emperor Shun's Mausoleum: 1. Ancient cypresses; 2. Ancient chessboards; 3. Ancient buildings 🌳Copper The two ancient cypresses are said to have been planted by Dayu himself for Emperor Shun, more than 4,000 years ago. One is a living cypress embracing a dead cypress, a wonder called the Husband and Wife Cypress. There is also a Ming Dynasty stone tablet under the tree; the other is called the Dragon Cypress, with a unique shape, like a reclining dragon chair. According to legend, Liu Xiu once sat here when he took refuge between the Han Dynasty. ♟️Ancient chessboard According to legend, Emperor Shun invented Go to teach his son. The chessboard was built to commemorate Emperor Shun's creation of Go. The exact construction date is unknown. Go originated in China and was recorded in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. It was later introduced to Korea, Japan, Europe and the United States, becoming a permanent event in the world's intellectual sports. 🏯Ancient buildings The ancient building's offering hall is a relic of the Yuan Dynasty. It has a hip roof and the front eaves beam is built from a complete poplar wood, 17.4 meters long. It is the only example among the three Yuan structures in Yuncheng. It is said that this building is not the original building of Emperor Shun’s Mausoleum, but the offering hall of Guandi Temple in Beixiang Town which was relocated due to road construction. Other buildings such as Xiangting were built in the Qing Dynasty. Behind the Xianting is the Mausoleum of Emperor Shun, and further back is an "Imperial City", which is the Temple of Emperor Shun that was first built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. There are verdant ancient cypresses in the temple, the mausoleum of the tomb family is ancient and solemn, and the master of the hall is majestic. On the central axis of about 1,000 meters in length, from south to north are distributed the Shinto Road, Chonghua Bridge, Ancient Cypress Factory, Mountain Gate, Offering Hall, Hall of Worship, Mausoleum, Imperial City, Theater, Offering Hall, Main Hall, and Sleeping Hall. It is majestic and large in scale.
