Seasonal Lottery (months in advance) – Apply for a future window. 2. Day-before Lottery (Most popular) • Submit your application between 12:01 AM and 3:00 PM (Mountain Time) the day before your intended hike. • You’ll get the result by 4:00 PM the same day via email. • 💰 Application fee: $6 per group (up to 6 people), non-refundable • 🎟️ If selected, each person pays an additional $3 permit fee ⏰ Time Slot Selection: Choose before 9 AM or after 9 AM when applying—but rangers usually don’t strictly enforce your time slot. We reached the start of the chained section around noon, and the ranger didn’t check time stamps. No Permit? Don’t give up! After about 2–3 PM, rangers often leave due to the heat, and permit checks stop. Fewer hikers too. It’s not guaranteed, but some have successfully hiked without a permit later in the day.
