"Tokyo Shinjuku Lemon Beef Tongue 牛たんの湯" is really as famous as it is said to be. I heard that you need to make a reservation online one month in advance. I got off at Shinjuku Station on the Toei Oedo Line and it takes 15 minutes to walk here. The store is located at a low-key intersection and is not very obvious at night, but you can see a long queue of people.
Transportation: Get off at Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Toei Oedo Line and walk for about 5 minutes. Get off at Shinjuku Station on the Toei Oedo Line and walk for about 15 minutes. Take the Seibu Shinjuku Line or JR Yamanote Line to Shinjuku Station and walk about 10 minutes.
I didn't make a reservation in advance and waited in line for about 50 minutes. Suddenly, the waiter came out to ask if there was any customer staying alone. Luckily, I was seated before other customers. The restaurant is located on the basement floor. Except for the kitchen bar in the middle, the rest of the small space is filled with tables and chairs. I was led to the bar seat and used my mobile phone to scan the QR code to order. If you don't know how to use it, you can ask the waiter to place your order. The dining time limit is 60 minutes, and the food will be served within about 10 minutes after ordering.
The thick-cut beef tongue is charcoal-grilled on the outside and tender on the inside, and sprinkled with pepper to increase the aroma. It is said that the store uses Binchotan charcoal to grill the beef tongue, so the degree of doneness is very evenly controlled and the moisture of the meat is retained. It is crispy and chewy when you bite it, not fishy or hard at all, and retains the original sweetness of the ox tongue. It is even more refreshing with a squeeze of lemon juice, which is really amazing. The set meal includes white rice, beef tongue soup, beef tongue curry, lettuce salad, grated yam and miso chili sauce. The grated yam can be paired with white rice or beef tongue. The beef tongue curry has a slightly spicy taste that can change the flavor. The lettuce salad is served with vinegar and ginger sauce, which is crisp and refreshing. Dipping beef tongue in miso and spicy sauce is also a good way to eat it, after all, beef tongue itself does not have too much seasoning. The cost of a meal is about 4,000 yen. The waiters are friendly and speak good English. The service is a bit American-style. They come to ask about your dining situation from time to time. I recommend everyone to come and experience it.
