The Otsu Festival, one of Lake Biwa's three major festivals, takes place October 11th and 12th. From the nighttime array of lanterns to the daytime puppet performances on the floats, the sheer spectacle is truly breathtaking and worth experiencing! The Otsu Festival, established in the early Edo period and designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is held every autumn around Tenson Shrine near Otsu Station. Thirteen large, two-story floats carry mechanical puppets, which stop at 20 locations along the parade for performances. The day before the main festival, there's a festival called "Yogumi" (Yoya Palace), where the puppets are removed from the floats and illuminated rows of lanterns are displayed throughout the streets. Although the Otsu Festival is relatively close to Kyoto, it's only a 50-minute Shinkansen ride from Nagoya Station! For those interested in traveling to Kansai, traveling via Chubu Centrair International Airport (Central Japan International Airport) is a great option to avoid the airport's crowdedness and surrounding traffic. Lake Biwa Ropeway (Biwako Valley / 滋賀ロープウェイ) This stop completely exceeded expectations — it was beautiful and definitely one of the highlights of the trip! 😍 As soon as you get on the ropeway, the temperature noticeably drops — just a few degrees, but enough to feel refreshing. As long as the sun isn’t out, it’s not too hot. The viewing platform at the top is incredibly open and wide — amazing views all around! ☀️⛰️ 🚠 There are three ropeways in total: The first one is paid — once you arrive at the top, there’s a café with a scenic deck right outside. Great photo spot 📸 Then follow the path to the right — you’ll reach the second ropeway, and further down is the third. The second and third ropeways are open chairlifts (feet dangling!), moving slowly — super fun and relaxing. No tickets required for these, just hop on. 🎢🪑 🎡 There’s even a small playground area at the base of the second lift — nothing too serious, just casual and fun to explore. ⚠️ Note: The third ropeway stops operating at 4:00 PM, and The second one finishes by 4:30 PM. If you miss it, you can still walk down — but better to keep an eye on the time! 📸 The last photo (image 4) was taken while riding the second chairlift back down — I didn’t have time to explore that area, but it looked fun too!

It is highly recommended for those who like nature hiking. The world heritage site of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei is the head temple of the Tendai sect. The temple grounds are located in the dense cedar forest on the mountain. The temple covers an area of ​​nearly 1,700 hectares, which is very vast. The entire area can be divided into three parts: the East Pagoda where the core of the temple is located, the West Pagoda with dense cedar forests, and the Yokogawa River deeper in the mountains. Each of the three districts has its own representative temple, the Konbutsu-chudo in the East Tower, the Jodo-in in the West Tower, and the Yokogawa-chudo in Yokogawa. I stayed at the inn 'Biwako Hanakaido' located in Shiga Prefecture. Upon arrival at the inn, we were served a welcome drink. It was delicious. While enjoying the welcome drink, we were given an explanation of the inn, and then our luggage was taken to our room. The room had a great view, overlooking Lake Biwa. We could choose from several types of yukata, which was exciting! Since we stayed in a room without a private bath, we used the hotel's hot springs! There was also an open-air bath, and we had it all to ourselves. After that, we had dinner. There was meat, fish, and dessert, all of which were delicious and very filling. After dinner, we relaxed in our room! The inn also offers items for room entertainment, and we played Jenga! The breakfast (10th photo) was also delicious, making it a perfect inn experience! During our 8-day and 7-night Kansai free trip, starting on the fourth day, we experienced another highlight of the entire trip - a self-driving tour of Lake Biwa. After careful selection, we booked a two-night stay at the hot spring hotel "Rokusuitei" located on the shores of Lake Biwa. From Osaka, it takes about 2 hours to drive along the navigation to reach this hotel. 🌟Free parking and shuttle bus🌟 Lake Biwa Green Water Pavilion is located on the west side of "Lake Biwa" in Shiga, Japan's largest lake. If you are not traveling by car, you can take the JR Kosai Line and get off at Oto Onsen Station (Ogoto Onsen), then call the hotel and they will provide free pick-up service to the hotel.
