Okinawa Onna Village Gourmet Stroll
Mitsuya Honpo Sata Andagi Donuts + Goood Gelato Italian Ice Cream + A Surprise Encounter with a Street Cat
📍Address: 5378-1 Onna, Onna Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture (Goood Gelato)
🍩 On this sunny afternoon in Okinawa, we visited Mitsuya Honpo in Onna Village, a traditional shop specializing in "sata andagi" (Okinawan donuts). The shop features a charming Ryukyu-style red-tiled roof, with two Okinawan lion statues guarding the entrance. Inside, a transparent display case showcases a variety of sata andagi flavors, including purple sweet potato, chocolate, mocha, brown sugar, and cheese. Each piece is priced at 120 yen, and you can pick your favorites and pay by weight at checkout.
🛍 We chose a few purple sweet potato and brown sugar flavors. The donuts were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a subtle sweetness that wasn’t overwhelming. The natural aroma and slightly sticky texture of the purple sweet potato were particularly delightful. To our surprise, a local cat was sunbathing by the entrance, calmly observing passersby, adding a touch of relaxation to our visit.
🍨 Afterward, we walked to Goood Gelato, a cozy Italian gelato shop with a pastel-colored exterior. The shop offers a wide range of flavors, and we opted for "Rich Mango," "Salted Chocolate Chip," "Matcha," and "Purple Sweet Potato." Each scoop was pure and natural in flavor, with the mango and salted chocolate standing out the most. We ordered two cups with two and three scoops respectively, totaling 1,842 yen. With sunlight streaming through the windows and the gelato melting slowly, it was the perfect leisurely afternoon during our trip.
This little dessert tour added a memorable flavor experience to our Okinawa trip, beyond its stunning ocean views. Next time you’re in Onna, don’t miss out on this "sweet" adventure!
