(I overheard someone asking if they could pay in Japanese yen, and it seemed to work out, so that might be an option!) Jiufen is a seaside mountain town made famous by the Studio Ghibli film - spirited away. It is famous for its old tea houses and narrow wishing streets, particularly the main ‘old street’. You’re able to experience traditional Taiwanese tea culture and get a glimpse of life outside of the main cities. There are lots of great places for souvenirs and tea to take home in little packs, they’re also lots of tea houses with amazing views out over the coast. There are also quite a few smaller temples if you wander the roads that lead down the mountain, I found some of those had the best view points of the surrounding areas. Luckily we were able to drive with friends but there are lots of bus routes from Taipei and surrounding towns. For this trip to Jiufen, I specially arranged to arrive in the evening to enjoy Jiufen Old Street at night. When the lanterns of Jiufen are lit up at night, it feels like entering a cartoon scene, which is very atmospheric. Although the bus was crowded on the return trip, the overall journey was very pleasant and worth recommending to everyone.

Jiufen was one of our must visit day trip when we were in Taipei! We took a direct bus 1062 and the whole trip took about an hour. When we arrived, we headed to A-Mei teahouse and it was so pretty! We headed up and had an experience making tea. There were also a lot of other cafes and shops around the area. Perfect day trip and would highly recommend. Do also bring cash around as most shops would prefer that mode of payment!
