Natural scenery
Akiyoshidai is located in the east of Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is the largest karst plateau in Japan and is recognized as a national park (4,502 hectares) and a special natural monument (1,384 hectares). The Akiyoshi limestone that constitutes Akiyoshidai was formed by coral reefs that were uplifted by changes in the earth's crust 300 million years ago. Limestone that dissolves in rainwater creates lava landforms (karst landforms). Coral reefs in ancient times turned into green grass fields and are still alive today. The four seasons of Akiyoshidai will give you a taste of different styles. The entire Akiyoshidai is designated as Akiyoshidai National Park, and is designated as a special natural monument along with Akiyoshidai's larger stalactite cave "Akiyoshido".
