This gate is the first building in which reliefs are used by humans. The city wall was built around the mountain with huge stones. It is 5 meters thick, 8 meters high, and has a circumference of about 900 meters. It is very strong. Located in the heart of the Greek countryside, about 90 minutes from Athens, this ancient site is a must-see for history enthusiasts. The entrance fee was €12, which was well worth it given the grandeur of the ruins and the historical significance. 🏛️ Walking through the Lion Gate and seeing the remnants of the ancient palace was like stepping back in time. The massive walls and intricate artifacts offer a glimpse into Mycenaean civilization that’s both awe-inspiring and humbling. Nearby, the Tomb of Agamemnon (or the Treasury of Atreus) is another highlight, showcasing impressive beehive-shaped architecture. Informative signage throughout in Greek and English make the visit much more interesting. Some parts of the site are accessible for mobility impaired but not all. Interesting trails below the citadel lead to beehive tombs-- don't miss these! The museum on the same grounds hold the collections taken from the excavations and gives context to the visit. Don't miss it. Be aware this is a stop on many tourist itineraries and it can be crowded with tour groups.
