The doors are usually closed, but a festival to pray for good fortune is held from 9am on May 3rd to May 5th as part of the Good Fortune Road Opening Pilgrimage. The enshrined deity, Sarutahiko Okami, was a guide for Ninigi no Mikoto in the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandson. As a result, he is considered to be the "God of Road Opening" who guides all things in the best direction. There is also a theory that Sarutahiko Okami is the original Japanese tengu. Asagaya neighborhood will be sprinkling a little romance into the air this August when it hosts one of the largest Tanabata Festivals in Japan. This festival, which celebrates a legendary love story between deities, will be held at the Asagaya Pearl Center Shopping Arcade from Aug 4–8. Tanabata may have originated in China, but it has since been adopted wholeheartedly by the people of Japan, who celebrate the love story of Orihime, the weaver girl, and Hikoboshi, the cowherd boy, who meet every year on this day (and only this day - they're separated by the Milky Way the rest of the time).
