Vienna's main gateway to the outside world
Villena station was opened in 1858 with the opening of the MZA line between Alicante and Madrid. The building, like those of the entire Almansa-Alicante district, was designed by Agustín Elcoro Berecíbar, of which Villena is one of two secondary buildings. To this day, it has barely changed but has undergone some minor changes.
Since June 18, 2013, with the opening of the new Viennese high-speed station, the Alvia trains that originally stopped at the station have changed to stop at the new high-speed station. Because of this, the long-distance trains that now stop at this station only connect Villena with Murcia/Cartagena with Barcelona. There are also some medium-distance services with main destinations being cities such as Jaén, Ciudad Real, Albacete, Alicante, Valencia, Cartagena and Murcia.
