I started in Saffron Walden, a market town that’s as picturesque as it is welcoming. The winding streets, timber-framed houses, and vibrant market made it a joy to explore. I especially loved visiting the Saffron Walden Museum—small but packed with fascinating local history. Next came the showstopper: Audley End House & Gardens. This Jacobean mansion is a dream for history lovers. From grand staircases to working Victorian kitchens, the place is brimming with character. The gardens, landscaped by Capability Brown, are perfect for an afternoon walk with a thermos of tea. Nature lovers—don’t skip Hatfield Forest. It’s a living piece of history, with ancient oaks, mirror-still lakes, and trails that seem to lead nowhere and everywhere. I saw families picnicking, dog walkers enjoying the peace, and even a few deer grazing quietly. Best Time to Visit: Late spring through early autumn is ideal. May brings wildflowers, while September has that golden countryside glow. Insider Tips: Bring sturdy shoes; many paths are natural trails. If you love quaint pubs, stop in Thaxted for a bite and a view of the windmill. Great for a day trip or a slow weekend break from London—just under 90 minutes away. The flowers weren't in full bloom yet in March, but they were beginning to appear. The house tour is easily the most child friendly tour we have been on. The house is much changed since the 17th C but, unusually is blessed by still possessing much of the furniture and many of the paintings which its successive owners purchased before EH took possession. The guides we met were exceptionally knowledgeable about the house, its contents and its history.

Walking through the grounds felt like stepping into a painting. We loved strolling through the vibrant parterres, the serene woodland walks, and the charming kitchen garden. The Victorian stable yard was another favorite, where we met the gentle Shire horses and learned about life in the 19th century. The organic café nearby served delicious homemade treats, perfect for a relaxing break.
