Fully reflects the changes in religious worship over the times
Andalucia Tour ~ Jaén (Region)
It was built on the foundations of a Roman temple, later became a mosque, and converted to Christianity during the reign of Ferdinand III at the initiative of Saint Isidoro.
The church has undergone numerous transformations and features elements from different periods, although its dominant features today are those of the Renaissance. The first two sections of the sanctuary have Gothic columns and cross vaults. There are two doors on the outside: the Gothic-style Perdón Gate and the Moorish-style Luna Gate. Notable features include the Renaissance grille of the Sagrario Chapel, the old choir stalls and the grille of the sacristy, the last of which is in Gothic style. The cloister is also in Gothic style, with three Mudejar chapels and one Gothic chapel. The Golden Chapel is the most important of the cathedrals and is in Renaissance style with clear Italian influences.

One of Spain's oldest and most traditional universities
Andalucia Tour ~ Jaén (Region)
Baeza had a university before the cities of Úbeda and Jaén.
The building was constructed at the end of the 16th century. The most important part of this building is the courtyard. St. John of Avila was a schoolmaster. It was founded by the Rev. Dr. Rodrigo Lopez, a relative of Pope Paul III. The insular nature of the old university of Baeza led to a mystical tendency among its students, known as “alumbrados,” who were subsequently investigated by the Spanish Inquisition. Leading professors were sentenced to prison.

The best olive oil in the world
Andalucia Tour ~ Jaén (Region)
Located in the province of Jaén, Baeza is a city set amidst a vast olive grove, with cobbled streets featuring some of the best-preserved Renaissance architecture in Europe. It is part of the World Heritage Site along with its sister city Úbeda. A vital destination that evokes other times.
A monument in silence
Baeza is a quiet place. It was so quiet you could hear the wind blowing through the buildings and the sound of different footsteps on the cobblestone streets. It is surrounded by a vast plain of olive trees, with a maze of streets leading to the historic quarter, whose buildings retain their centuries-old history. There are coat-of-arms mansions, churches, palaces and squares surrounded by small whitewashed houses and walled alleys.
Three squares – Plaza Santa María, Plaza Santa Cruz and Plaza del Popolo – sum up Baeza. Three spaces in the Plaza Santa María invite you to stop and admire sights such as the Cathedral and the Seminary of San Felipe Neri; the Jabalquinto Palace, the Old University and the Church of Santa Cruz, located in the Plaza Santa Cruz; and the Plaza del Popolo. The Lion Fountain and the Villars Arch. It takes about ten minutes to walk from one square to the other.

The city of "The Olive Tree" in Sanmao's works.
There are two "World Heritage Cities" in the Andalusia region of Spain. They are less than 10 kilometers apart and both have more than 50 ancient buildings. They are known as the "World Heritage Twin Cities".
This is Úbeda (Figures 1-3) and Baeza (Figures 4-6) in Jaén Province. Although these two cities are close, they are different. Some people commented: "Úbeda is quiet, and Baeza is delicate."
Úbeda has a long history. The Sacra Capilla del Salvador in the city is a representative work of Spanish Renaissance architecture; Baeza has a magnificent city hall and the Fuente de los Leones.
🌳It is worth mentioning that the capital of Jaén Province is the hometown of Sanmao's husband, José. "The Olive Tree" depicts Jaén Province. Include these two treasure towns in your next Spanish travel list!
If you don't come here, you will never understand "Olive Tree"
Jaén in Andalucía is the hometown of Sanmao and Jose, which has 20% (more than 60 million) of the world's olive trees. It was because of seeing these olive trees all over the mountains that Sanmao wrote "Olive Trees" to express her feelings of wandering far away.
The Renaissance buildings in Úbeda and Baeza were named World Heritage Cities in 2003. The two cities are only 10 kilometers apart and have been developing slowly together for hundreds of years. Their different styles complement each other, and they are inseparable. As time goes by, their connection becomes stronger, especially during the Renaissance period. Therefore, the people of Úbeda and Baeza call these two small towns the "Twin Cities".
We spent one day touring the two cities and saw the famous and familiar statue of the Virgin Mary, whose exquisiteness was breathtaking! The churches and buildings here are well preserved. Each place has its own story. You can also see various artistic clay works and small shops selling them. It is very suitable for buying some souvenirs.
🍴Restaurant Taberna El Pájaro The small restaurants here all have a retro feel in their decoration! It's really possible to immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere of the Twin Cities!
