[2025 Deqin Attraction] Travel Guide for Baima Snow Mountain Yakou (Updated Mar)

In mid-November, while heading to Meili Snow Mountain, we purposely took the old G214 National Road to encounter the breathtaking beauty of Baima Snow Mountain in late autumn. Snow-capped peaks, blue skies, and mountains covered in fiery red and golden hues created an unforgettable autumn masterpiece. If you're traveling from Shangri-La to Meili Snow Mountain, this hidden gem is a must-see. Skip the new tunnel and opt for the old road instead! Every turn reveals jaw-dropping views, making frequent stops for photos irresistible. At the 4292-meter pass, mobile coffee stands offer hot drinks—perfect for relaxing and savoring the stunning scenery.

As early as the National Day of 2022 when I drove to Yunnan, I planned to drive around Yunnan on the newly built Deqin Road, but at that time the road construction time on the announcement board was extended, so I didn't make it. Four months later, during the Spring Festival of 2023, I finally got my wish‼️ 🚗Self-driving loop Kunming➡️Lijiang➡️Diqing➡️Nujiang➡️Baoshan➡️Dehong➡️Dali➡️Chuxiong➡️Kunming 🌟The most essence section of the journey Diqing (National Highway 214)➡️Deqin Road➡️Nujiang (National Highway 219) 🛣️Old National Highway 214｜The old road to Tibet is still worth it On the way from Shangri-La to Deqin, there is a section of the old National Highway 214, which was an important route from Yunnan to Tibet. After the new National Highway 214 was built, this old national highway was downgraded to Provincial Highway 236, from an altitude of over 3000 to 4292 meters, you can enjoy the Baima Snow Mountain, the cascading roads and grassland vegetation at close range, and you can see the Meili Snow Mountain in front when the weather is good. The drive to Baima Snow Mountain Pass is the highest road section in Yunnan, and it is also the border between Deqin and Shangri-La. 🛣️Deqin Road｜Difficult and beautiful The construction of Deqin Road started at the end of 2009. It is an important road connecting Diqing Tibetans and Nujiang Lisu. The completion of this road also means that the large loop of Yunnan tourism is finally opened, and there is no need to detour. It is more convenient to go from Yunnan to Sichuan! The Peacock Mountain Tunnel was the most difficult section during the construction of Deqin Road. It used to have to cross the Peacock Mountain Pass at an altitude of 3800 meters. Due to the harsh climate and perennial snow, it was affected by heavy snow from December to June every year and had to be closed, making the road impassable. Now that the Peacock Mountain Tunnel is open, it only takes less than three kilometers and an altitude of 3400 meters to drive through easily. 🛣️National Highway 219｜The picturesque mountains and rivers When I first saw this border line National Highway 219, I was a bit surprised. There are at least 200 kilometers of artificial sightseeing trails built along the road, with picturesque Bingzhongluo and the first bay of the Nujiang River. Continue north along Bingzhongluo to Tibet. National Highway 219 runs from north to south through the entire Nujiang Prefecture, with the Biluo Snow Mountain and Gaoligong Mountain on both sides of the river, forming a canyon landscape. There are many places to stop along the way, especially like sitting by the rolling waves of the Nujiang River, and taking pictures casually is very cinematic!

Starting from Deqin, the old 214 really gave me a lot of surprises. Looking at the mountain peaks from a different angle, it's a completely different scenery. It's too amazing. Navigate to the White Horse Snow Mountain Pass (you can use this from Deqin to Shangri-La) or the Pillow Basalt Landform is to go to the old 214 (make sure the navigation shows the 236 Provincial Road for the White Horse Snow Mountain section), don't go through the White Horse Tunnel, most of the roadside does not have guardrails, drive carefully.

I chose the entire National Highway 214 from Shangri-La to Deqin. Navigating into the old National Highway 214, which is Provincial Highway 236, in the middle of the White Horse Snow Mountain pass, it takes about 1 hour more. But it's really worth it. The White Horse Snow Mountain is close at hand, as if you can touch it by reaching out. We didn't follow the online search for the viewing platform. We stopped to take pictures when we saw the beautiful scenery. Because the altitude has reached more than 4000, I dare not run wildly when I get off the car. I simply took some pictures of the scenery. I have always regretted missing the autumn scenery in western Sichuan this year, but I saw the most beautiful autumn at the White Horse Snow Mountain.
