Baixiang Street is an old street in Chongqing, about 425 meters long and less than 10 meters wide, located between Wanglongmen and Taipingmen. According to legend, there used to be a huge stone beside the city wall, which looked like an elephant, and was named Baixiang. The white elephant is on the north bank, and there is a lion mountain on the south bank, so there is a saying that "blue lions and white elephants lock the river". In fact, the river in that area is wide, the "white elephant" is upstream, and the "green lion" is downstream, and they are not completely opposite, so it is impossible to "lock" the river. The "White Elephant" stone originally had a pool, named Baixiang Pool. Baixiang Street faces Longmen in the northeast, Taipingmen in the southwest, and is close to Yamen. With the development of water transportation in Chongqing, merchants and boaters came to Chongqing to transport goods, and many warehouses and commercial houses were built in that area. Baixiang Street also increasingly prosperous. After Chongqing opened as a port, foreign businessmen could not come to the city without permission. But foreign businessmen had to do things, so there was a comprador. Baixiang Street is in Taipingmen, so it is used by various compradors and commercial firms as their offices. Therefore, Baixiang Street has an earlier foreign house in Chongqing City. Those houses also absorbed some advantages of traditional Chinese architecture, for example, most of them used lattice doors and windows, carved hollow, quite delicate. For quite a period of time, Baixiang Street was the most luxurious street in Chongqing.
