Winter Wonderland: Exploring Berchtesgaden in the Snowy Season
#europetrip
By the Bavarian Alps, Berchtesgaden transforms into a magical winter wonderland as the snow blankets its dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, and charming villages. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Berchtesgaden in winter has something for everyone.
Begin your day with a visit to the Königssee, one of Germany’s most beautiful lakes. In winter, the lake’s emerald-green waters are surrounded by snow-covered mountains, creating a breathtaking scene. Take a boat ride to the iconic St. Bartholomew’s Church, which looks even more enchanting under a snowy veil.
For adventure enthusiasts, the region offers excellent skiing and snowboarding at the Jennerbahn Ski Resort, with well-groomed slopes and panoramic views of the Alps. If you’re not into skiing, try snowshoeing or winter hiking along the serene trails that wind through the Berchtesgaden National Park, where you might spot wildlife like deer or ibex.
History buffs shouldn’t miss the Eagle’s Nest. While the access road is closed in winter, you can still learn about its significance at the Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum.
After a day of exploration, warm up in one of Berchtesgaden’s cozy gasthofs. Savor hearty Bavarian dishes like schnitzel or käsespätzle alongside a steaming mug of mulled wine.
End your evening at the Watzmann Therme, a thermal spa with indoor pools and saunas, perfect for relaxing while gazing out at the snowy peaks.
Berchtesgaden in winter is more than just a destination—it’s a fairytale come to life, blending adventure, history, and Bavarian hospitality into an unforgettable escape.

Exploring the Beauty of Berchtesgaden: A Hiker’s Paradise
#europetrip
Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, Berchtesgaden offers some of the most breathtaking hiking experiences in Germany. Known for its stunning landscapes, serene lakes, and towering peaks, this region is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the best hikes in Berchtesgaden is the trail to Lake Obersee and the famous Röthbach Waterfall, the tallest in Germany. Start your adventure at Königssee, a pristine emerald-green lake surrounded by steep cliffs. A boat ride across the lake brings you to the trailhead, where the true magic begins.
The hike to Obersee is relatively easy, making it perfect for all skill levels. As you walk along the path, you’re surrounded by lush greenery, with glimpses of towering mountains peeking through the trees. Upon reaching Obersee, the sight of the crystal-clear lake reflecting the surrounding peaks is breathtaking.
From there, a slightly steeper trail leads to the Röthbach Waterfall. The cascading water, set against a dramatic alpine backdrop, is well worth the effort. Take a moment to soak in the tranquility before heading back.
For a more challenging hike, consider climbing Mount Jenner for panoramic views of Berchtesgaden National Park.

Mount Watzmann
Mount Watzmann, is one of the most iconic mountains in the Berchtesgaden Alps, located in southeastern Germany near the border with Austria. It is the third highest mountain in Germany, with its main peak (Watzmann-Mittelspitze) reaching an elevation of 2,713 meters (8,901 feet). The Watzmann massif is made up of several peaks, the most prominent being the Mittelspitze (middle peak), Südspitze (southern peak), and Hocheck (the northernmost peak). The Watzmann is known for its striking pyramid-like appearance and is often depicted in many landscape photographs and paintings of the region. One of the most famous features of Watzmann is the "Watzmannfrau" (Watzmann's wife) and the "Watzmannkinder" (Watzmann's children), which are peaks to the west that are said to resemble a woman lying down with her children, according to local legend. The area around the Watzmann is popular for hiking, mountaineering, and alpine skiing, especially in the Berchtesgaden National Park, which surrounds the massif. The Watzmann's east face, one of the highest in the Eastern Alps, is a significant challenge for experienced climbers. The nearby Königssee, a beautiful alpine lake, enhances the region's natural beauty, making it a well-known destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Berchtesgaden National Park: Mountain and Lake Tour, Better for Lakeside Photos
Visiting Berchtesgaden National Park definitely means hiking. If you only hike the section around Königssee Upper Lake, it takes about an hour and a half. Some parts of the trail are not very easy to walk, so it's recommended to wear sneakers and pants. However, the scenery along the way is beautiful, with mountains and lakes. At the farthest point of the Upper Lake area, you can even see a waterfall. But personally, I don't recommend this waterfall; it's too small and not very impressive. It's better to spend more time taking photos by the lake.
