3 days and over 50000 steps was all it took to experience one of the most spectacular views I have seen. Nestled in the south-west corner of New Zealand's South Island is a not-so hidden gem. We have visited Milford Sound before by car (the homer tunnel is an amazing example of engineering and worth a visit as well) but for this trip in 2015 we decided to hike in to the sound. Led by the wonderfull team at Holyford Wilderness Experience this was a trip like no other. We were well taken care of with the meals provided as outstanding as the scenery we took in. The lodges were comfortable and it was nice to have hot running water for showers. Getting There - You can either choose to follow a tour group or self-drive. Self-drive from Queenstown will be approximate 4-5 hours. Roads to Milford Sound are steep with numerous turns. Can do a stopover at Te Anau to get a quick bite and petrol. The Ranch bar and grill will be a good choice where there are a variety of food choices. Attractions - Amazing views of waterfalls and mountains. Good experience despite the long ride. Do check the timing of the cruise tour as number of tours depends on the season. New Zealand's South Island felt like stepping into a fantasy movie. From the moment I drove out of Christchurch and across the Canterbury Plains, my eyes and heart were captivated. The endless meadows and the distant snow-capped mountain ranges created a breathtaking scene that words could hardly describe. Mirror Lakes is a must-visit spot, even though the trek is short. The serene lake reflects the mountains and sky in perfect symmetry, creating an almost surreal landscape. The tranquil atmosphere made it feel as though I could hear the whispers of nature itself. Passing through Homer Tunnel, I entered the heart of Fiordland National Park. Milford Sound exceeded all expectations. Towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the slow cruise through the fjord were simply awe-inspiring. A light drizzle added to the magic, blending with the mist to create an even more enchanting view. Even on the way back, the sense of wonder never faded. New Zealand's South Island truly embodies the phrase 'quiet awe.' It's a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime—a destination that leaves an indelible mark on your soul.

Cruising through the mist, the sight of waterfalls, cliffs, and seals was breathtaking. Even rain is no cause for concern—it actually makes the scenery more mystical and dramatic. The nature of the South Island is not something to merely look at but to truly feel. More than any photograph, the air, sounds, and scents of the place leave a deeper impression. A sudden drizzle heightened the atmosphere, and amidst the misty spray, the vibrancy of nature came alive. Every step of this journey was filled with awe. While it's challenging to experience both in a single day, these two destinations offer contrasting yet complementary emotions on the South Island.
