This historic steam-powered cogwheel train offers an unforgettable journey to the summit of the Rothorn. The 40-50 minute ride is a feast for the eyes, as the train chugs its way up through lush meadows, dense forests, and dramatic alpine landscapes. As the altitude increases, the views become even more breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of Lake Brienz, snow-capped peaks, and rolling green valleys. The rhythmic puffing of the steam engine adds a nostalgic charm, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself. It’s a magical experience that perfectly captures the beauty of Switzerland.

The journey takes one hour. Along the journey to the summit of the Rothorn Kulm, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding Alps, such as Tiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, valleys, forests and lakes. For season 2024, it opens from 8 June to 20 October 2024. The return journey for adult without discount costs is CHF 96 per person. You can either purchase the ticket online or at the station in Brienz. To make sure you able to get a seat, it would be better to purchase the ticket including seat guarantee in advance or be there early to buy it at the station. Taking the historic steam train to Rothorn is a fantastic experience. It's a fun trip suitable for the whole family, especially young children. The ride takes about an hour, but both the journey to and from are wonderful. The views of the lakes and mountains along the way are absolutely stunning. At the summit, you can enjoy the magnificent views of the Bernese Alps' three giants, including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You can also take in the beauty of Brienz, Glaubebielen, and Schrattenfluh. Afterward, you can freely take any train back along the same route, which is very convenient. The train travels slowly, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the scenery and gain a unique experience. It is highly recommended to book seats during the peak tourist season, as there are few trains, and due to the steep gradient, the steam engine only pushes two carriages, limiting the train's capacity. There is only one train per hour in both directions. Don't miss this historic steam train, as it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Absolutely worth it!

The weather in Brienz was cloudy, but the beautiful blue of Lake Brienz was spread out before us. The departure time was 9:40, and even though it was cloudy, the train was almost full. The impressive red steam locomotive looked very cute, so I got on with excitement. I was able to sit in the "seat facing the locomotive on the left side of the train as I was traveling" that I saw on the internet. The scenery was the most magnificent I have ever seen, and the train passing close to the cows was very impressive. I arrived at the top of the mountain, but I couldn't see anything because of the fog...I'm so disappointed that if it had been sunny, the view would have been amazing, but I thought it was cool and like a dream. The sixth city on our self-guided tour of Europe with my son is Brienz, the famous filming location of the Korean drama Crash Landing on You (the lake view where the male lead Hyun Bin plays the piano). In Brienz, you can ride a bicycle around the lake, go boating, take a cruise to watch the sunset, and many other activities. Because my son likes trains, I chose to take a nostalgic steam train to Brienzer Rothorn. Along the way, the train passed through the forest over the turquoise Lake Brienz. The spectacular scenery made me reluctant to close my eyes. When I reached the top, I saw the magnificent scenery of the Alps and the Bernese Oberland.
