You can climb to the top of the cathedral's east tower, Torre del Reloj, from where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the old town. The main facade consists of two octagonal towers in Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The dome is striking for its yellow glazed tiles, and on its base stand sculptures of the four evangelists. The temple is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and sixteen chapels. The nave is divided by oval columns with fluted Corinthian columns at either end. Of note is the elaborately inlaid wooden choir and, in the crypt below, the tomb of Manuel de Falla, a famous 20th-century Cadiz composer. The panoramic views from the tower were incredible. We then strolled through the charming old town, with its narrow streets and vibrant plazas. Lunch was a treat at a local seafood restaurant where we enjoyed fresh catch of the day 🐟. The afternoon was perfect for relaxing at Playa de la Victoria, a lovely beach just a short walk away. Cadiz Cathedral took over 100 years to build, from 1722 to 1838 which makes it an elegant mix between Baroque style, Rococo style, and Neoclassical style. It has later been declared a Bien de Interes Cultural (of cultural importance) for the last 100 years. The cathedral has many names; Santa Cruz Sobre el Mar (Saint Cruz on the Sea), Santa Cruz Sobre las Aguas (Saint Cruz on the waters), but most famously, the New Cathedral. The latter comes from the fact that the cathedral that used to stay there was burned down in 1596 before the new one was erected. The cathedral is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00-21:00 and Sundays from 13:30-21:00, and the clock tower is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00-21:00 and Sundays from 12:00-15:00 and 16:00-21:00. Last entry to the cathedral is 45 minutes before closing time and 30 minutes before closing time for climbing the clock tower.
