Best Things to DoNo.2 of Best Things to Do in Belarus
The Holy Spirit Cathedral is located on Freedom Square in the center of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. It is the cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and one of the country's important religious landmarks. The church was built between 1633 and 1642. It was originally part of a Franciscan monastery. It adopts the typical Vilnius Baroque style and features a white facade and a twin-tower structure. The interior of the church is richly decorated with a four-story wooden icon screen, showcasing the icon art of the Moscow School. Among them, the most revered is the icon of "Our Lady of Minsk", which is believed to have miraculous powers. The Holy Spirit Cathedral is not only a center of religious activities, but also a witness to the historical changes of Minsk. During the Soviet era, the church was closed and used for other purposes, but it was reopened during World War II and became the cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church. Today, the Holy Spirit Cathedral is not only a holy place for believers to make pilgrimages, but also an important place for tourists to understand the religious and cultural heritage of Belarus.
