Legend of the Centipede Temple
According to legend, a young man who achieved fame and fortune failed to show gratitude and filial piety to his mother upon returning home. As punishment, he was turned into a ‘rock ship’ located at Bukit Jung. A centipede, believed to be the reincarnation of the young man’s mother, is often seen beside the rock. Visitors now hope to find a centipede here for good luck and prosperity.
To mark the spot where the young man was turned into a rock, a giant stone centipede has been erected at the temple. This centipede serves as a reminder of the consequences of ingratitude and the importance of filial piety. The legend teaches us about the significance of showing respect and gratitude to our parents and elders. It also emphasizes the idea that our actions have consequences, even beyond our own lifetimes.
When you visit the Centipede Temple, take a moment to reflect on this legend and appreciate the spiritual depth it adds to the temple’s atmosphere.
