Located by the Dongjiang River in Huicheng District, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, there is a 'Chaoking Gate', which is an imitation ancient city wall built by Huizhou City for flood prevention, capable of blocking centennial floods. It is also the site of a famous historical event in modern Chinese history. Originally, this was the old city wall of Huizhou, built in the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty. The local officials of Huizhou expanded the city walls and built this gate, which was the north gate at the time. After further expansion, it was renamed 'Chaoking Gate', and it remains an important historical relic of Huizhou City. Having weathered over six hundred years of vicissitudes, it now serves as part of the southern embankment of the Huizhou dyke, continuing to protect the city. In October 1925, during the Eastern Expedition, the attacking army fought against warlords at Chaoking Gate, conquered Huizhou, and the second Eastern Expedition also saw fierce battles here, defeating the warlords and achieving victory. Due to wars and other reasons, all the gate towers were destroyed over 80 years ago. In 2006, they were restored and rebuilt, standing tall once again by the Dongjiang River. Chaoking Gate has three gateways and six city gates. Normally, these six electric floodgate doors are open day and night for traffic, but when the water level of the Dongjiang River rises to 15 meters, the floodgates will close to resist the floods of the Dongjiang River. The city tower has an 'Ancient City Memory Exhibition', but unfortunately, it was closed when we visited, which was a bit disappointing.
