Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya,
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly named the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is a museum in Mumbai which documents the history of India from prehistoric to modern times.
In January 2022, Mumbai’s premier museum celebrated its centenary with an extensive restoration. Its architecture itself is arresting, a magnificent Indo-Saracenic building topped by a monumental dome inspired by the Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur. Inside, it is a light-filled space with original wooden pillars and balconies. The visitor experience was also enhanced, so you will find thematic, well-lit galleries showcasing Indian antiquities and artefacts such as sculptures, bronzes, and weaponry as well as European, East-Asian, and Southeast Asian art. The extensive textile gallery and the miniature paintings collection are especially worth a look. On right now is a wide-ranging exhibition of ancient sculptures from India, Egypt, Assyria, Greece, and Rome, which is presented in association with The British Museum, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, along with other museums in India (until Oct 1).
