Weekend plans without eating up your annual leaves! Day trip from KL to Melaka
If you’re looking for a quick escape from the hustle of Kuala Lumpur, a weekend day trip to Melaka is a perfect choice. Just a two-hour drive away, this UNESCO World Heritage City offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and amazing food. Here’s how I spent a memorable day in this charming town.
The trip began with breakfast at The Daily Fix Café, a hidden gem tucked inside a heritage shophouse on Jonker Street. Known for its pandan pancakes and aromatic coffee, this cozy spot is the perfect place to fuel up for a day of exploration. The café’s rustic interiors, with antique furniture and old-school charm, make it a must-visit.
After breakfast, I took a stroll past Melaka’s historic landmarks. The iconic Christ Church and Stadthuys in Dutch Square immediately transport you back in time with their striking red exteriors and colonial architecture. Nearby, the ruins ofA Famosa Fort and St. Paul’s Hill tell the story of Melaka’s rich history as a former Portuguese, Dutch, and British colony. Fun fact: Melaka was one of the most important trading ports in Southeast Asia during the 15th and 16th centuries.
No trip to Melaka is complete without exploring Jonker Street. This vibrant street is a treasure trove of local snacks, souvenirs, and quirky finds. I grabbed a box of piping-hot ondeh-ondeh (traditional rice cakes filled with palm sugar and coated with shredded coconut) and a refreshing coconut shake to cool off.
Pro tip: If you’re visiting on the weekend, Jonker Street comes alive with its famous night market, offering even more street food, trinkets, and performances.
By evening, I reluctantly made my way back to KL, but not without a promise to return. Whether it’s for the food, history, or charm, Melaka never fails to offer something special for a quick weekend getaway.
