Taiyuan's Chunyang Palace is located on the west side of Wuyi Square in the center of Taiyuan. It was first built in the Yuan Dynasty, rebuilt during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620), and renovated and expanded during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736-1795). The word "Chunyang" in Chunyang Palace is the name of Lü Dongbin, a famous Taoist priest and one of the Eight Immortals in the Tang Dynasty. After Wang Chongyang founded the Quanzhen School of Taoism, Lü Dongbin was revered as one of the "Five Northern Ancestors", so this place is also commonly known as the "Lü Zu Temple". Today, it is the Shanxi Provincial Art Museum. When you walk into the gate of Chunyang Palace, you will see an elegant wooden archway. On the west side of the archway, you can see four statues cast in the Ming Dynasty. The so-called "Dragon King Statue" in the middle is particularly noteworthy for its exquisite craftsmanship. In the stele corridor at the base of the west wall, in addition to 20 ancient steles, there are also stone Buddhas, stone beasts, stone sutra pillars, etc., all of which are relics from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty. The Lv Zu Hall is the main hall of Chunyang Palace, located in the center of the courtyard. It is a spectacular building in the palace. The top of the Lv Zu Hall is an octagonal peak, and the bottom is a wing-shaped eaves. The statues of Lv Dongbin, Wang Chongyang and Qiu Chuji are enshrined in it. To the east of the Lv Zu Hall is the Five Emperors Hall, and to the west is the Grandma Hall. The courtyard behind the palace is also worth a visit. The area of the courtyard is not large, but the architectural pattern is quite unique. It is said to be built according to the directions of the Eight Diagrams, with distinct Taoist architectural features. The Wei Pavilion in the courtyard is the tallest building in Chunyang Palace. Climbing the pavilion and looking around, the scenery of the city center is vivid. There is a cross-courtyard to the west of the backyard, which is the palace's dining hall. Next to the dining hall is a pocket garden, shaded by flowers and trees, with red walls and green tiles. Coming here will give you a feeling of being in a different world. The art gallery in the Attraction mainly collects Buddhist statues from past dynasties. It has more than 20 exhibition rooms, including the "Stone Carving Art Exhibition", which displays stone carvings from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty; the "Taoist Cultural Relics Exhibition", which displays Taoist sculptures and introduces the history of Taoism from one aspect; the "Treasures from the Sea Exhibition", which displays bronze treasures selected by Taiyuan Copper Factory in the 1970s; and the "Ceramic Art Exhibition", which displays ceramics from past dynasties.Every year during the Spring Festival, there are Taoist rituals and blessing ceremonies, and you can also watch local Jin opera performances. Chunyang Palace is close to Liuxiang, a famous business district in Taiyuan City, so you can visit it together.
