Stunning Seasonal Hydrangea Garden in Fukuoka
The hydrangea garden at Hakozaki Shrine spans approximately 1,700 tsubo (around 5,610 square meters) and features an impressive collection of 3,500 hydrangea plants from about 100 different varieties! The garden's pathways are thoughtfully designed, allowing visitors to take a full loop and enjoy the entire garden. The vibrant sea of hydrangeas in various colors is truly unique.
Unlike other popular tourist spots, this garden is relatively quiet, with most visitors being locals. Since hydrangeas typically bloom in June, the garden is usually open for viewing only during this month. If you're planning a trip to Fukuoka in June, make sure not to miss this enchanting spot! (We visited in early June, and most flowers were still in the process of blooming. Mid to late June should be the peak time for viewing!)
For those who enjoy collecting goshuin (shrine stamps), the shrine offers a limited-edition hydrangea-themed goshuin during this period. You can purchase it directly from the shrine.
📍
The garden is conveniently located near subway and JR stations.
Admission fee: 300 yen.

Thousands of years of ancient charm: the quiet time of Hakozaki Shrine
#FukuokaItinerary
When you first enter Hakozaki Shrine, the ancient large torii gate seems to silently welcome every visitor, telling the thousand-year history. The towering trees blocked out the sunlight, and the quiet path was covered with tiny shadows of the trees. One's footsteps were gentle, as if afraid of disturbing the solemnity and tranquility. As you approach the main hall, the magnificent architecture will take your breath away, with its carved beams and painted buildings exuding an intricate beauty. The Hachiman Omikami enshrined here is regarded as the deity that protects Fukuoka. Worshipers pray devoutly, whether for peace or blessings for the future, and this place seems to be able to provide a calming force. In the courtyard, the clear pool reflects the ancient pines and the vermilion corridor, like a flowing painting. It happened to be a Kagura performance, and the melodious music and dance brought people back to the depths of history. When I left, I looked back at Hakozaki Shrine. Its ancient charm and tranquility still lingered in my heart, becoming an unforgettable memory of my trip to Fukuoka.
