Winter in Yangzhou: A Weekend of Slow Living in Jiangnan
Although January in Yangzhou is quite cold, it's still worth a visit. The unique winter scenery and low off-season prices mean you can enjoy old-fashioned dim sum without long lines, discounted attractions, and the Grand Canal Museum without having to fight for tickets.
🚌Transportation: There are many high-speed trains from Shanghai to Yangzhou, taking about 1.5–2.5 hours. You can choose a suitable time to travel, and the second-class seat fare is about CNY 120.
🏠Accommodation: I chose the Crowne Plaza Yangzhou, which is a ten-minute drive from Yangzhou East Station, close to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the Beijing-Hangzhou Conference Center. There are many attractions nearby, and transportation is convenient. 🥳The hotel is in a Chinese Tang style, and the lake view room I booked was spacious, modern, and equipped with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and a square bathtub. The hotel's all-day restaurant on the first floor offers a rich buffet breakfast. ❣️The hotel is already decorated for the New Year, with a strong festive atmosphere. It's worth mentioning that the hotel offers a variety of accommodation packages, and the package I chose included a ticket to the Peony Garden opera project. You can go there according to the time on the ticket and 👀enjoy traditional Yangzhou opera. There is also a garden behind the garden with a unique style.
💗Nearby attractions & activities:
There are many attractions around the hotel, and it's only 10 km from Slender West Lake. You can walk 100 meters to Dongguan Street, He Garden, and Ge Garden. There are many Hanfu shops on Dongguan Street, so if you're interested, you can make a reservation in advance and 📷go there. There are also many specialty restaurants worth visiting, such as Republic Spring's Yangzhou fried rice and dried tofu, Yangzhou University yogurt, lotus root powder balls, and Yangzhou foot massage. 👏I went to the local old brand "Chunwang Foot Art", which is a small shop but with good skills. Remember to make a reservation in advance!
😋Food: You must experience the local dim sum culture in Yangzhou. I avoided the two places that require you to line up at 5–6 am and chose Xiangyuan Tea House, which is on the must-eat list. ⏰I arrived at 9 am and waited for about 10 minutes before being seated. The taste was good, and the price was reasonable. It was the most satisfying meal I had in two days.
Overall, there are fewer tourists in Yangzhou in winter, which is suitable for people like me who are afraid of crowds. 😛The travel experience without long lines is great, and it's easier to take photos of the garden scenery in the off-season!
