The best-preserved thousand-handed Buddha statue is like a peacock spreading its tail. If you look closely, they are all different. It is a wonderful flower in the world's grotto craftsmanship. The last one is a pagoda of 1.8 meters and more than 800 kilograms dragged by Manjushri Bodhisattva, which has not fallen for 800 years, lamenting the exquisiteness of ancient architectural mechanics. Visited another world heritage site here in China! The Dazu Rock Carvings! 👏🏻🙌🏻 We joined a group tour to see this place and I was so glad we did because its worth it. We left the city centre at past 8am and arrived at the 1st stop at around 10. We saw some statues on top of this mountain then before 12noon we left for our lunch! We stopped at a small Chinese restaurant and our table was all set! We sat and ate with all the joiners of the tour! Then, we headed off to the gallery where we watched this amazing 3D movie-like intro of the place and it was just amazing! Afterwards, we went on to our last stop, hopped on an electric cart that took us to all these magnificent carvings you see in the pics. After the tour, I was able to see some souvenir stores and bought this owl made of craft materials. Before 5:00, we were back at the city and then just had a stroll around Hongyadong where we were dropped off. I loved how organized and well-guided our tour was, we paid 200rmb all-in! Dating back to the 9th century, the epic Buddhist rock carvings in Dazu will dazzle and astound. These towering historic carvings depict Taoism and Buddhist beliefs and doctrine. In China there are 4 main Buddhist grottoes: Mogao, Yungang, Longmen and Dazu. Located near Chongqing, the Dazu collection is the most preserved of the 4 as it escaped the destruction of the cultural revolution due to its isolated location. There are multiple sites in the Dazu area, but if you only have time for one (like we did) visit the main site of Baodingshan, which will take you almost 2 hours to walk around and see the epic carvings. Dazu is located approximately 1.5hours away from Chongqing (but will be longer if you visit on a public holiday and get stuck in traffic like we did). You can take a local bus, but we found it easier to hire a driver. #historicplaces

Getting to the Shuchengyan Statues I had to ask for directions the entire way… This place is incredibly hidden. Navigation only gets you to the village entrance. The remaining 170 meters, marked as a dotted line on the map, took me over half an hour to find. The villagers are very wary of outsiders. As a non-local, I was watched as soon as I entered the village. When asking for directions, be sure to use local terms. Ask for "Banbian Miao" (Half-Side Temple). If you ask for "Shuchengyan," they'll collectively tell you they've never heard of it. It's quite something. 🗿About Shuchengyan Carved during the Southern Song Dynasty, it's a nationally protected site and a purely Taoist grotto. While less visually stunning than the "Dazu Five Mountains," it's unique. The statues depict rare themes, combining carving, painting, and gilding. To me, it looks more like a Song Dynasty fashion show. 📸Highlights ✅Shuming Empress Niche: The consort of the Eastern Peak Emperor (the Taoist deity of fertility). Judging by the attire of the attendants on either side, they appear to be dressed as Song Dynasty eunuchs. ✅Eastern Peak Emperor Niche: Comparable to the costumes and makeup of the emperor and court ladies in the Song Dynasty imperial palace. ✅Ziwei Niche: The three-headed, six-armed Tianpeng Marshal and Tianyou Marshal. ✅Three Pure Ones Niche: The three "principals" of Taoism. ✅Jade Emperor Niche: A familiar face from Journey to the West. Even the court ladies' attire exudes an air of artistic and intellectual beauty. Every garment and accessory is historically accurate, every expression and smile is worth pondering. 📌Tips: Navigate to "Shuchengyan Cliff Carvings." There's no parking on the roadside or in the village. I'm grateful to the village elder who let me park in his courtyard. The Shuchengyan statues are not open to the public. The cultural relics preservation officer is like a broken record, constantly repeating, "The leaders won't let you see." It's both frustrating and amusing.
