From Kalambaka we will return to Athens by bus. Since there is only 1 train per day between the two cities and it leaves in the evening, we do not want to arrive in Athens late at night. The bus ticket costs 29 euros, leaving Kalambaka at 11 am, changing trains at Trikala at 12 pm, and then heading straight to Athens at 5 pm. Along the way, we stop to use the restroom and have lunch at 3 pm. The food is very expensive, so we ordered macaroni and squid. I was shocked at 10 euros, but the taste was very good. The Meteora is a rock formation in Central Grecce hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Meteora is located near the town of Kalabaka, which is around 355 kilometers 5 hours away from Athens. Meteora is the largest archaeological site of Greece, it has been a UNESCO World Heiritage Site since 1989. A vast complex of giant rock pillars with monasteries made on the picks of the sandstone cliffs centuries ago creates a truly surreal landscape found nowhere else in the world. Today only six monasteries are active, during our tour, we visited 3 out of 6, that is Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas, Holy Monastery of St. Stephen ( the most easy access with a stone bridge ) and Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity. In order to visit all the six monasteries, you need to stay at least for 1 night, you also need to take note of their different opening hours. 3 euros need for the entrance fee to the monastery .

I visited the Agia Triada Monastery. It is the last monastery on the Meteora trekking route. Opening hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Closed on Thursdays. Entrance fee is 3 euros. To enter the monastery, you need to climb stairs along the rock wall, and the view of the town of Kalambaka from the rooftop of the monastery is amazing. We went trekking to Meteora from the town of Kalambaka. There are seven monasteries in Meteora, and the trekking through them takes about 6 to 8 hours. Each monastery has different days of the week for the old building, so be sure to check the opening dates in advance. You can rent an electric bike for 20 euros a day. There are bus tours starting from about 5,000 yen, but I would definitely recommend walking. I came to Kalambaka, the city of Meteora. You can already see the rocks of Meteora from the city, but this town is a base for sightseeing in Meteora, so it is a good place to go. Compared to Athens, prices are cheaper, and hotels are available from 1,500 yen per night in dormitories even during the season. There are also restaurants that offer lunch for 10 euros, and fast food restaurants that are even cheaper than that, so I don't think you need to worry too much about prices. Each monastery has different opening days, but all monasteries are open on Saturdays and Sundays. Please note that each monastery has different opening hours. In the last photo, I uploaded a paper I received from the hotel that lists the opening hours of each monastery and the number of stairs (important. The stairs are quite steep) for your reference. You can get from Athens to Kalambaka by train or bus. However, the Meteora Monasteries are not within walking distance from the city of Kalambaka, so you will need to charter a bus or taxi. We went by rental car from Athens. The hotel is Dellas Boutique Hotel. I recommend it because the parking lot is large and the owner's family is very kind. Before we travel back to Athens this morning, we went for a walk around Kalambaka and accidentally saw a market there, so we tried to explore and see what interesting things there were. We stumbled upon a box of strawberries, a lot of them, for only 1.5 euros. If it were in Thailand, it would be 200-300 baht, so we tried buying it. The taste was really sweet. The views from up there were unreal! 😍 Afterward, I visited the Holy Trinity Monastery, which is a bit harder to reach but offers some of the best views in Meteora. The climb was quite a workout, but the peace and tranquility made it all worthwhile. 🌿 If you're not much of a hiker, you can still enjoy the scenery by taking a scenic drive around the area. I visited Meteora after driving four hours one way after falling in love with a single Instagram video. It seems that many people visit from Athens as a day tour, but since the round-trip travel time is not short, I recommend staying for about one night. We checked in at our accommodation in Kalambaka around 4 PM and walked the hiking course from Kalambaka to St. Stephen's Monastery. It is not a long course, about 30 minutes one way, but it is still hiking. However, because it was late, we could not see the inside of the monastery and just looked at the view and came down. The next day, we drove to the most famous Valaam Monastery and Meteora Monastery. The monastery is larger in size, but I personally liked Valaam Monastery better. The monasteries in Meteora are closed on alternate days of the week, so please check the schedule. Also, women should wear long skirts or bring a scarf. Some monasteries lend scarves to wear around your waist like a skirt, but in the case of the Monastery, you had to buy one. We chose the holy rock hostel at Kalambaka as our accommodation when we arrived in the city. The accommodation was quite clean. The location is in the city, you can walk out for a walk or find something to eat. The price we stayed was only 600-700 baht per night. You can walk from the train station or bus station in just 5-10 minutes. Today we will try taking the Greek train from Athens to Kalambaka. Unfortunately, the ticket we booked was cancelled when we arrived at the station, so we changed our plan to take the train straight away, taking one train and then a bus at Palaeofarsalos station. The train leaves Athens at 10.28, arriving in Palaeofarsalos at 13.30, then waiting for the bus again at 16.30. The train ticket costs 25 euros and the bus is 5 euros. I suggest ditching tour groups that drive up the monastery. Instead hike up!!!! The feeling is very satisfying and fullfilling. You can stay at the hotels at the base of the Meteora. Wake up early and slowly climb. If you want to catch the sunrise wake up earlier duhhhh. Anyway as you climb up the rocky pathway it kinda dawn on you how the priest and priestess and everyone at the monastery hike up and down everytime they need something from town. I love the Kalambaka area here. Everyone is so warm and friendly. Every morning everyone sending good vibes greeting each other "Kalimera" which is good morning. I will always Kalimera to you too lol. The hotel that I stayed in literally under the rocks...love the view...love how cooling it is....If you are a nature person, you can feel all the earthly energy giving you it's abundance....You will feel very recharged.
