Dongjiang Lake is a huge area with tons of things to see, do and explore. When entering you can buy tickets which include bus and boat and rafting tickets. The bus takes you past a dam and to the main area with restaurants and shops. You can then walk to some of the waterfalls and shorter paths. The boat from there takes you to the island after a 20 min cruise where you can do more walks or go into the huge limestone karst cave which you can see in my pictures is truly spectacular. There is an option of white water rafting on the other side of the lake which I didn't try. The cave was the biggest highlight for me, it was cool and damp and the paths lead you up and down and around the maze like cave for about a 20-30 minute walk. There are bats on the ceiling and huge limestone features everywhere lit up by multicoloured lights. It's like an alien world and something that no pictures do justice. The cave is very large and at the end of the path you can buy souvenirs. In dongjiang lake I would recommend trying some local small spicy fish snacks. #mountainview #staycation

Built in the late Qing Dynasty, Yugong Courtyard spans approximately 50 meters in width and 20 meters in depth, covering a construction area of about 1,000 square meters. It consists of three two-story houses arranged in a row, featuring a hard hilltop roof and a brick-wood structure. The three main gates are all recessed-style, with stone pillars at the bottom and wooden pillars on stone bases on both sides. The door frames are wooden with stone lintels and thresholds. The halls are adorned with wooden screens, carved wooden doors and windows, and stone lattice windows on the exterior walls. Except for the central house, parts of the side houses have been partially damaged. In 2022, the courtyard walls and gatehouse were reconstructed, and a small number of villagers still reside here.

Built during the Republic of China era, the Zhongtian Li's Western-Style Mansion was constructed by its owner who reportedly studied abroad before returning to make a fortune from coal mining in Zhongtian Village. To showcase his success, he decided to build this European-style mansion, which uniquely blends Chinese and Western architectural elements, reflecting the owner's distinctive aesthetic. Ronghuazhai Ancient Opera Garden is said to have a history of over 600 years. The current opera garden building was constructed during the Qing Dynasty, covering approximately 400 square meters. It features a two-story brick-wood structure with a courtyard layout and horse-head gable walls. The side entrance leads to the stage building on the left, a central courtyard, and two-story corridor-style buildings on the right and both sides, allowing audiences to dine while enjoying performances. Unlike typical opera stages in southern Hunan that are usually attached to ancestral halls, this independent opera garden is quite rare. Sanyuan Ancient Village was built in the mid-Qing Dynasty, with a history of about 300 years. It was founded by the three grandsons of Yuan Daoda, the founding ancestor of Huang Changling: the three brothers Yuan Jinglin, Yuan Junyuan, and Yuan Chunyang. Sanyuan Village is nestled by the mountains and water, featuring southern Hunan Hui-style architecture. The houses are arranged in a straight line, with blue bricks and black tiles, laid out horizontally with two vertical rows, two horizontal rows, and a central hall. The village has four ancient spring wells with clear and sweet water that flows year-round. The naming of the village was thoughtfully considered. One explanation is that the ancient saying "Sanyuan Qidi" (Three Firsts in the Land) inspired the name, with "Yuan" meaning "beginning" or "first," as in "Common Era" or "top scholar." The three brothers named it "Sanyuan Village" to symbolize their aspiration to excel. Another explanation is that in early local imperial examinations, the village produced three successful scholars, hence the name "Sanyuan Village." A few years ago, villagers Yuan Zujiu and his sister Yuan Zuoying raised over 2 million yuan to renovate the main hall and ancient residences of Sanyuan Village. They also established a high-end leisure farm here, attracting many tourists to visit the ancient village, bringing prosperity back to Sanyuan Village. The large collection of cultural relic plaques gathered by the village owner in the ancient hall is truly remarkable.

Its central structure features three halls (upper, middle, and lower) with three bays, an recessed wooden front door with stone column bases, carved wooden door frames with stone pillows, a stone threshold, and an inscribed plaque reading "Yingchuan Di" above the entrance, along with horse-head gable walls. Shigu Village got its name from a pair of stone drums bestowed by the emperor. The ancient village features 4 traditional dwellings, 1 ancient academy, 1 ancient tomb, an old pathway, and numerous ancient trees. The most prominent structure is the Cheng Clan Grand House, built in 1810. At its center is the Main Gate, with two transverse alleys dividing the main building into upper, middle, and lower sections containing 21 courtyards. The central section comprises upper, middle, and lower halls. The upper hall houses an intricately carved dragon-adorned ancestral shrine. The grand house boasts 72 main rooms and 18 utility rooms, forming a vast interconnected compound with excellent lighting and ventilation. Remarkably, it remains dry during rain or snow, warm in winter, and sheltered from wind. Its distinctive exterior features rooster-comb-shaped eaves and walls adorned with clay sculptures of dragons, phoenixes, and bats, exuding grandeur while maintaining practicality. Preserved in excellent condition for over 200 years, it stands as a unique treasure of southern Hunan. The Cheng Clan Grand House was also the former residence of General Cheng Zikai. Born here in 1827, General Cheng was a Qing dynasty scholar, Army General, pioneer of the National Revolution, member of the Tongmenghui, key figure in opposing Yuan Shikai, anti-Japanese hero, and close friend of the Chinese Communist Party. He studied military science in Japan in 1904, joined the Tongmenghui in 1905, and died fighting against Japanese invasion. He was posthumously promoted to General in 1946. Shigu Village is recognized as part of the fourth batch of China's Traditional Villages and a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Hunan Province.
