📍The History of Spinalonga, the Island of the Lepers in Crete, Greek Island 🏠 Spinalonga is situated in the natural harbor of Elounda in the Lassithi in Crete. It’s known in the world, inhabited leper community between 1903 to 1957 and this was one of the last active leper colonies in Europe, population reached nearly 400 inhabitants during the outbreak of the illness. Infected people were sent to isolation. In Greece, the isolation center was on the island of Spinalonga. Today, Spinalonga, is one of the most visited archaeological site of Crete, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the greatest historical landmarks in Greece, with people from all over the world arriving in Crete to explore this island. There are a few houses renovated to museums and you would be able to get a glimpse of inhabitants everyday living here. How to get there? There are regular ferry service across the island from Elounda town which is only 20-30 mins away, entry tickets can be purchased once you arrive on the island. I stayed at a small seaside inn, where opening the window revealed the magnificent view of Mirabello Bay. Every morning, I enjoyed breakfast on the balcony, watching the sunrise over the bay and feeling the tranquility and peace of the city. The simple yet delicious Cretan breakfast, with fresh bread, olives, cheese, honey, and strong Greek coffee, paired with the salty sea breeze, energized me for a day of exploration. The most famous landmark in Agios Nikolaos is undoubtedly its unique 'Lake Voulismeni.' I often walked along the beach, admiring the beautiful sea views and feeling the gentle sea breeze. I also tried various water activities, such as boating, snorkeling, and diving. The clear waters are perfect for water sports, and during a snorkeling trip, I saw many beautiful corals and tropical fish, an unforgettable experience. There are many other attractions around Agios Nikolaos worth exploring. I rented a car and drove around Mirabello Bay, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way. The landscape varied, with steep cliffs, dense olive groves, and crystal-clear bays. I also visited some nearby villages, experiencing the local lifestyle and cultural atmosphere. During my days in Agios Nikolaos, I experienced the charm of Crete.
