Best Things to DoNo.5 of Best Things to Do in Rio de Janeiro
Its creator, Jorge Celeron, is a traveling artist from Chile who traveled to 50 countries and made a living selling paintings before settling in Rio. Beginning in 1990, Celeron remodeled the stairs in front of his house with some discarded tiles, and it has been out of control since then. His creations have received support from all over the world, and received about 2,000 tiles from 60 countries, resulting in today's giant works that are 125 meters long and have as many as 250 steps. The story of the steps This was originally an ordinary cement staircase in a slum. In 1990, Chilean artist Selarón began to decorate it with tiles recovered from garbage dumps, and later added donations from tourists from all over the world and his own creations. On the way up to the Seleron steps you can see the graffiti on the street walls by the local Brazilians. These graffiti are full of local characteristics and have a rich imagination. Every angle of the 250 steps is a painting, and on both sides of the steps, there are also steps walls of varying heights created by artist Selarón with ceramic tiles. These steps on both sides have a red background, and various patterns are spelled out with other different colors, and each tile is a story. The tiles on some steps are divided into two pieces, which are respectively pasted on the upper and lower steps, and together they form a complete painting when viewed from the side. Walking down the Seleron Steps, there are little surprises waiting for you to discover.
