However, the shuttle bus was very fast, but after taking the shuttle bus, you still have to walk for half an hour to get to the cactus garden. It was built in 1983 and officially opened to the public on May 1, 1988. It is a multifunctional landscape botanical garden that integrates plant scientific research and popularization, species ex situ conservation and display, plant cultural leisure, and production application. The botanical garden is very large and is divided into 6 major scenic areas. This time we mainly visited the Cycad Germplasm Resources Conservation Center. Cycas is actually a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It belongs to the genus Cycas of the Cycadaceae family. Cycas’ leaves, roots, flowers and seeds are used as medicine. The roots and leaves can be collected in all seasons, the flowers can be collected in summer, and the seeds can be collected in autumn and winter, and then dried. Its main functions are astringency, hemostasis, detoxification and pain relief. Different varieties of cycads are planted here, and various garden landscapes are carefully created for display purposes. The scenery is quite nice. A ticket is required to enter the botanical garden, which costs 15 yuan per person. The business hours are 8:00-18:00 every day. If you have enough time, you can check in all six major scenic spots in one day. The scenery is still great and worth recommending.

Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens or Xianhu Gardens is a stunning nature park found to the east of Shenzhen's Luohu district. It is closest to the Xianhu Road subway station on line 2. The park is 20RMB per person for entry and you can use a shuttle bus to quickly travel around the perimeter of the park (highly recommended in the heat of summer) or choose to walk around the road. If you choose to walk you will get a more intimate view of the thousands of different species of trees, flowers, cacti and every other kind of plant they have in this park. Most plants have a plaque showing their name in English, Chinese and latin name. The park has several areas of note to visit including: a large temple that is in use by monks, a pagoda, an area of trees planted by recent famous political figures, a bonsai tree area, a cactus area, a fossil forest, an aquatic plant area, a paleontological museum and the central lake area with some interesting bridges. The highlights for me were the fossil forest and the cactus area, I never knew so many amazing and unique species of cacti existed. You can enjoy plants and flowers of various shapes and forms in a beautiful environment, and visit attractions such as the Plant Bagua Maze and the Unique Cave. The Hongfa Temple is located in the Xianhu Botanical Garden, where you can also burn incense.

Fairy Lake or Xianhu gardens is a large botanical park located in Yantian district of Shenzhen, to get there you should take the subway to Xianhu road and walk for about 5 minutes to get to the entrance. Alternatively you could take a 20 min shuttle bus or taxi from Luohu. It costs 10RMB per person for entry which is really cheap for what you get access to. The park is primarily a large road and walking trail filled with different species of plants, most of the trees and flowers have labels telling you their scientific names which is really cool. If you dont want to walk all the way around the park (probably takes 1.5 hours) you can take a bus to the interesting points. I would suggest the bus if you travel here during hot summer months as it can get particularly humid and sweaty here. There are several points of interest around the park, the first of which is the main central lake, with a small rocky beach area and a few small rivers, they sometimes have boats on the lake. Nearby are some trees planted by famous Chinese leaders. There are several small gardens like aquatic plants, bonsai garden (currently closed), fossil forest, pagoda, temple and cactus garden. The cacti are particularly impressive and i highly recommend visiting. A few tips: The Hongfa Temple blessing cards must be downloaded before claiming—you can scan on-site or prepare in advance. Buses have two routes: the Garden Loop and the Hongfa Temple Line—don’t mix them up! Alsophila Lake isn’t as big as expected, but the landscaping is exquisite, perfect for photos (though there might be a short queue). The Sky and Earth Zone’s lawn is under maintenance, so give the grass some time to grow. The Cycad Garden museum has limited opening hours—if it’s midday, explore elsewhere first. Fun observation: The fish in Tianchi seem shyer—maybe fewer people walk this path? They dart away the moment you approach, which is pretty adorable.
