The main house is believed to have been completed in Meiji 26 (1893).

I visited Karatsu during my trip to Saga! I heard there's a really beautiful observatory in Karatsu, so I decided to check it out. The observatory is located on a winding hill that you can drive up, and the view that unfolds is just as amazing as the rumors say. There's a windbreak forest right in front of the sea, which was really fascinating. I've been to Japan about 7 times, and I think this is the most memorable view I've seen 🤍🤍 If you rented a car during your trip to Saga, why not visit Karatsu to enjoy some squid sashimi and check out the Kagamiyama Observatory?

This is the terminal where regular ferries operate between Karatsu (Karatsu East) in Saga Prefecture and Iki (Intsuji Port FT) in Nagasaki Prefecture. I found it while walking along the coast of the port with a view of Karatsu Castle and stopped by. Four to five ferries operate per day at different times depending on the season. Opening hours are 7:40-18:20. The terminal waiting room on the second floor also serves as the Karatsu Port Exchange Center. The area around Karatsu East Port has been developed into a walking path along the coast, and you can sit on a bench while looking at Karatsu Castle! As it is a ferry terminal, there is also parking for 70 cars, so it is recommended as a place to take a break from driving by car. Hoto Shrine is a shrine located on Takashima, a platform-shaped island about 3 kilometers near Karatsu. It is said that Hoto Shrine was originally built to commemorate Takashima's heroic figure "Nozaki Oki Mori Tsunayoshi". Because Nozaki stood up to fight off pirates 400 years ago to protect Takashima, he was regarded as "Treasure of Toshima" by the residents. Hence the name of the shrine: Hoto Shrine. The patron saint of Hoto Shrine is the tomb of Nozaki Oki Mori Tsunayoshi, which was built in Japan's Meiwa 5th year (1768). Karatsu Kunchi is an event held in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Karatsu Kunchi is the largest event in Karatsu, held in the fall at Karatsu Shrine. I went to this event, which is held every year in early November! It's a three-day event where you can see the world heritage floats. I went to see the Otabisho Shinko parade, which pulls the floats down the street. The Otabisho Shinko starts from Karatsu Shrine and travels around the old town. 14 floats depart in order. I noticed that there was a turning point in the route near Karatsu Station, so I grabbed a spot and waited for the floats to come. The floats pass by one by one. It's very impressive to see them turn with momentum. Apparently, sometimes they don't turn well, so I watched and took photos of the floats while watching their trajectory! I learned a lot from watching the Karatsu Kunchi while talking to the event staff. By the time I was leaving, there were a lot of people around Karatsu Station.
