Basic Information
- Location: Located in the west of Sarawak, on the south bank of the Sarawak River, about 35 km from the coast, at 1°33′27″N, 110°20′38″E.
- Area and Population: The city covers an area of 450.02 square kilometers and has a population of 402,738 in 2021.
- Climate: Kuching has a tropical rainforest climate, with high temperatures and heavy rainfall all year round. The average annual temperature is between 26°C and 28°C, with high humidity.
History
- In 1827, Kuching became the third capital of the Sarawak region of the Brunei Empire. In 1841, James Brooke was made King of Sarawak for helping the Brunei Empire quell a rebellion, and Kuching became the capital of the Kingdom of Sarawak. During World War II, Kuching was occupied by Japan. In 1946, Sarawak became a British colony, and Kuching remained the capital. In 1963, Sarawak joined Malaysia, and Kuching became the capital of Sarawak.
