It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. Yunoshimakan Hotel is located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. It is an old 5-star hotel. This hotel was also once a hotel where the Japanese royal family stayed. The hotel is located on a hill, but don't worry about transportation because there is a shuttle service from JR Station every now and then. One of the three famous hot springs in Japan: Gero Onsen. Among the many choices, we chose the Wangchuan Pavilion, because it is old enough, historical and traditional enough! Regardless of the room decoration, the decorative furnishings have the pace of the times ~ What I like most is the friendly service of the staff, a simple pot of ice water, a pot of hot tea, has witnessed the lack of hospitality in modern hotels! Taking the limited express train from Nagoya, you can reach Gero Onsen Station in about 1.5 hours. The "Gero Onsen Gassho Village" sign and the adorable frog mascot (the Japanese pronunciation of Gero resembles "Gero," the sound of a frog croak) immediately set the mood for sightseeing. Walking along the Hida River, you’ll soon arrive at the heart of the hot spring town. Unlike the bustling atmosphere of Hakone or Kusatsu, Gero offers a more laid-back and friendly vibe. ✅ Millennium Bath Shiragaki-no-Yu: This is Gero’s public bathhouse, offering affordable prices and a great opportunity for travelers to experience the local hot spring culture. ✅ Onsen Museum: A fun and educational spot showcasing the hot spring qualities from various regions of Japan. ✅ Onsen Manju and Onsen Pudding Shops: The old street is dotted with several shops selling freshly steamed treats. I bought a red bean-flavored manju, and eating it warm while strolling was the most comforting experience. ✅ Foot Bath Culture: Rest your tired feet Free foot baths are scattered throughout the old street. Whether couples or elderly pairs, everyone stops to soak their feet and chat. I spent some time at "Sagi-no-Ashi-Yu," where the water temperature was just right, and I felt completely warmed up as I soaked. Nighttime in the Onsen Town: Romance in tranquility As night falls, lanterns light up the old street, creating an atmosphere even more charming than during the day. Strolling in the streets wearing the yukata provided by the inn feels like stepping back in time.

Located in Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs, Suimeikan offers a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, allowing guests to experience its unique charm. Suimeikan consists of four distinct buildings: "Rinsenkan," "Hisenkan," "Sansuikan," and "Seiranso." Each building features different styles of rooms to cater to diverse preferences. I stayed in a Japanese-style room, which was spacious and comfortable. The must-try package at this hot spring inn is the one-night stay with two meals. Dinner was French cuisine served within the hotel, exquisitely prepared, while breakfast was a set meal that was hearty and delicious. ♨️ On-site Large Bathhouses Suimeikan is renowned for its extensive hot spring facilities, featuring three large bathhouses spread across different buildings. Among them, the open-air hot spring in Sansuikan left a lasting impression, allowing me to soak while enjoying the natural surroundings—a truly delightful experience. Additionally, the indoor hot spring in Rinsenkan is available 24 hours a day, providing guests with the convenience to relax anytime. 🚄 Transportation Suimeikan boasts an extremely convenient location, just a 3-minute walk from JR Gero Station. For travelers taking the train, it takes approximately 1 hour and 28 minutes to reach Gero Station from Nagoya Station via the JR Takayama Main Line's Wide View Hida train. The inn also offers shuttle services from Gero Station to the hotel, making travel even more hassle-free.
