This area as a whole is quite walkable and it is even near downtown around where the other tourist attractions are so it is not difficult to find. #cityplaybook It’s the best way to explore Naples as we had! Came there by cruise ship and had full day for this chaotic, lively, cheerful, and colorful city. The capital of the Campania region is one of the most authentic cities in Italy. Naples boasts many traces of history and different cultures that have developed over the centuries. For that reason, it became a Unesco World Heritage Site. 1. We started at Piazza del Plebiscito is one of Naples's highlights and prominent landmarks. This symbolic square housed the popular referendum that sanctioned the union of the Kingdom of Sardinia with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860. It was a crucial event that led to the creation of Italy as a unified country in 1861. 2. The Royal Palace of Naples faces the colonnade of San Francesco di Paola, on the opposite side of Piazza del Plebiscito. The size and splendor of this royal palace are a great example of the Bourbon dynasty. 3. Galleria Umberto I is a shopping arcade lined with shops and cafes. The main highlights are the richly decorated neoclassical facades and the giant 56-meter dome, creating a fascinating sense of light and space. The architectural elements of the Galleria Umberto I are reminiscent of the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele Il in Milan. 4. The monastery of Santa Chiara in Naples was one of the highlights of our trip. Santa Chiara is actually a vast complex encompassing the basilica, tombs of eminent people, and the abbey. Sadly, the World War II bombings severely damaged the basilica, destroying many art pieces and frescoes, including those from Giotto. Naples was the first stop for our mother and son pair 2 weeks trip to Italy. We were only spending 2 days here before we went to Rome, so it was quite a packed itinerary. Our B&B, DomisCarmela was located at the heart of the Spanish Quarters, and took a 20mins transfer from the airport to the place. There was a bit of apprehension about Naples, from friends and online talking about the cleanliness and crime of the city. The city however, was actually quite clean, and we felt generally safe there. The streets were quite quiet and there wasn't much people in the morning, but when afternoon came, the streets were very crowded. Everywhere we wanted to go was quite accessible, and we walked to majority of the sites, with an exception to Castel Sant Elmo where we had to take a funicular up and down from the city. We spent the whole day walking around, taking in the lovely culture of the streets, visiting world class museums and having delicious local food. We even went for a tour of the underground network underneath Naples, which was well documented and explained by our local guide. Overall, it was a great start and exposure to our Italy trip, and I recommend naples to anyone thinking of coming. We could have spend 1-2 more days so as to enjoy the place even more, but we felt that it was enough. Off the Rome next! #naples #travel #italy
